A sizeable and vociferous crowd showed up at the Hickman’s Playfield on Sunday 30th June, to witness an intriguing community match, involving the villages of Zion, Hickman’s, Webbe’s Ground and areas in close proximity.
The match was the source of much fun and laughter as a number of the cricketers came out of self imposed retirement to suit up for the game. It was the over 40’s coming up against the under 40’s in not one but two enthralling contests.
In match one, the over 40’s team captained by Sydney Newton, won the toss and elected to bat and chalked up 64 for 8 in their allotted 10 overs. Elroy Kelly top scored with 22 and there were all of 16 wides. For the youngsters, S. Manners; V. Hendrickson and J. Huggins, all got 1 wicket each.
The under 40’s team effectively got to the victory target in only 5.2 overs, after virtually running their older opponents into the dust— literally running impossible singles and two’s on their older opponents.
Sebastien Manners and J. Elliot teamed up in an impressive partnership to both top score with 28 runs each. They got to their target for the loss of just 1 wicket. Ellis Phillip got the lone wicket for the oldsters. Michael Brookes’ single over, went for all of 25 runs, after Jervan Swanston dropped a sitter, early in the over.
The two teams then went immediately into a second game, with a few minor changes to the line ups. This time around, the under 40’s team batted first and managed a total of 61 for 5 from their allotted 10 overs. Chevaughn Walwyn top scored with 18 and there was a helpful tally of 13 wides.
Former Nevisian speedster, Franklyn KUT Daniel, bowled impressively to bag 2 wickets for 8 runs and Vidal Dasent collected 2 for 12.
This time around, the over 40’s team, captained by Meredith Hendrickson, really showed their true mettle, led by a superb innings by Sterling Marshall –Heyliger who was not out at the end with a quick fire 39. They got to 62 for 1 in 7.5 overs. Dio Hendrickson got the lone wicket to fall.
Some of the high points of the game, which served to truly entertain the crowd, were:
• George Morris trying to run a single with the ball inches away from his stumps
• The under 40’s team completing 2 runs after the ball was played to first slip
• Captain Meredith Hendrickson demanding that umpire WADS Fergus be sent off the field
• Umpire WADS Fergus congratulating a bowler on getting a wicket and doing some on the field coaching as well
• The fielding exploits of Michael Brookes; George Morris; Meredith Hendrickson and Sydney Newton
• The running between the creases by the younger team
• A superb one handed catch by one particular bowler from a powerfully struck drive from Franklyn KUT Daniel who stood in disbelief for some time after.
After the games, both teams united in getting rid of the food and drinks available and a community meeting was coordinated by Community development Officer for the Gingerland area, Ms Joyce Moven.
