Australia captain Pat Cummins said the West Indies outplayed his team in the 2nd Test match at the Gabba to level the series at 1-1.
Shamar Joseph bowled 11.4 over to take 7 for 68 and inspire the West Indies to an eight-run victory over the world champions.
West Indies last beat Australia on home soil in 1997 and their last victory over the Aussies came in a world-record chase at Antigua in 2003.
Cummins singled out Joseph for praise in the post-match interview.
“Obviously, disappointment after a loss by that was a fantastic Test match and a fantastic series. I thought in particular, Shamar, the way he bowled today, he was right up for it and unfortunately we weren’t good enough,” he said.
“I thought West Indies were fantastic. They outplayed us this week. Sometimes you always learn the lessons the hard way,” Cummins added.
Australia was set 216 for victory and was well set at 133 for 2 before Joseph made his mark on proceedings.
“I think we were pretty confident coming into today. I thought our efforts yesterday were really good to try and chase 200-odd. I thought it was achievable. But yeah, they had different ideas,” Cummins said.
Steven Smith hit 91 not out for Australia as they fell eight runs short of victory.
“I don’t think we’re surprised. We’ve seen it for 15 years from Smithy. He was fantastic. Almost dragged us over the line singlehandedly at the end,” said Cummins.
“We’ve played enough cricket to know this game humbles you pretty quickly even if you think you’re on top of the world. You start at 0 for 0 at each game,” he added.
The teams now play the first of three ODI matches on 1 February in Melbourne.
