Minister of Sports in the Nevis Island Administration, Hon. Troy Liburd, officially celebrated Shakir Stapleton, Special Olympics tennis star, on his recent accomplishments.
According to Shakir’s coach, Derek Good, Shakir competed in the Special Olympics US national championship, held in Hilton Head, South Carolina, in the USA, last week.
He competed in the singles and the unified doubles and secured two silver medals.
Good thanked his other coaches, including Wayne Tyson, the Four Seasons Foundation, the Four Seasons Resort, Ed Enunciado, who made a special donation to ensure that Shakir could participate in the tournament and all others who assisted him on his latest outing.
Minister of Sports, Hon. Troy Liburd was elated, as he congratulated Shakir, who he described as an example of someone who could rise above his challenges and excel.
He coded him as ‘a super star on the special Olympics circuit’ and asked other young athletes to emulate his work ethics.
The brief ceremony was chaired by Director of Sports, Jamir Claxton and also present, was Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Sports and Education, Mr. Kevin Barrett.
