The man who owns one of the most iconic moments in sports history relived the moment on Friday in his homeland. Carlos Brathwaite, remembered for his heroic feat of four consecutive sixes to win the 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for West Indies, rolled back the years as he made a cameo appearance at the United States Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados. The event formed part of the trophy tour for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – which will be played in the West Indies and USA from 1 to 29 June.
The towering six-footer was a guest at a function hosted by Robert Nyhus, US Ambassador to Barbados & the Eastern Caribbean. During the event Brathwaite walked with the bat which he used in the demolition of the England bowlers during his extra-ordinarily brilliant performance in the final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 3, 2016, He let Nyhus use the famous bat and gave the Ambassador batting tips on how to hit big sixes.
Also in attendance were West Indies legend, Joel Garner; T20 World Cup winner Ashley Nurse; Noel Lynch the Head of the National Organizing Committee in Barbados; and Calvin Hope, Acting President of the Barbados Cricket Association and Director of Cricket West Indies.
“I welcome everyone here and want to offer a special welcome to the members of the ICC (International Cricket Council) and CWI (Cricket West Indies) who have brought this wonderful bright, shining and sparkling trophy. It truly is a great occasion, and we want to share in the great game of cricket. A special welcome to the three cricketers who know what it is like to win a World Cup… this is magnificent.”
The USA are the co-host of the tournament with the West Indies. The event will be the largest in the tournament’s history with 20 international teams playing 55 matches across nine cities. It is the first time the USA will host matches at a T20 World Cup, with 16 first-round matches split between Nassau County International Cricket Stadium (New York), Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium (Dallas) and Broward County Stadium (Lauderhill).
West Indies, who hosted the event in 2010, will hold matches at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium (Antigua and Barbuda), Kensington Oval (Barbados), Guyana National Stadium (Guyana), Daren Sammy Cricket Ground (Saint Lucia), Arnos Vale (Saint Vincent and The Grenadines) and Brian Lara Cricket Academy (Trinidad and Tobago).
The event was organized by members of the US Embassy in Bridgetown, and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 office in Antigua, and led by Philip Spooner, Media Operations Manager. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Trophy Tour continues around the island on Saturday with several stops at iconic locations – including Kensington Oval and Rihanna Drive.
