The third edition of the water safety training program began on Wednesday, July 10th, at the Barnes Ghaut community centre, with a short opening ceremony.
Terri Andrews, the local coordinator of the program, presided over the event and highlighted that the program was initiated by Premier Mark Brantley. She expressed gratitude to the team of experts who have returned to Nevis to conduct the training.
Jeff Dudley, the owner of WASH (World Academy of Safety and Health Training Centre), also delivered remarks. He mentioned that the first year had 10 participants, the second year had 40, and this year will see 200 people participating.
Hon. Eric Evelyn congratulated all the stakeholders who collaborated to make the training program a success. Premier Mark Brantley explained that the program was initiated due to the severe crisis resulting from the sinking of the MV Christena in 1970. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that all citizens and residents on the island of Nevis know how to swim and how to be safe in the water.
The program then continued with practical sessions at the Community Centre and later at Yachtsman’s Beach.
