The St. Paul’s Primary School in Basseterre celebrated its annual Literacy Week from Monday, February 26 to Thursday, February 29. The theme for the week was “Exploring My Inner World and the Outer World Through Literacy”. Teacher Ms. Lashauna Bridgewater gave an overview of the activities that took place throughout the week.
The week kicked off with an Opening Literacy Festival on Monday, followed by various literacy activities such as treasure hunts, games, storytelling, and puzzles. Tuesday was Book Day, where students were allowed to choose a book from a range of genres such as fiction, non-fiction, cooking, travel, and adventure. On Wednesday, literacy advocates were invited to the school to engage students in storytelling and other activities.
On Locomotion Thursday, the students moved through their community showcasing the theme “Exploring My Inner World and the Outer World Through Literacy”. The Word Wall Class Competition was also held during the week, which sparked the interest of all the teachers and students.
The main objective of the exercise was to motivate students to listen, speak, read, write, view, and visually represent in an exciting and interactive approach. The mission was to improve students’ motivation and language arts skills and to raise awareness among the community and other stakeholders about the importance of literacy. Teacher Bridgewater expressed her excitement about the week and how eventful it had been.
