St Kitts and Nevis Fisheries Department Expects to Record $15M Revenue in 2024

**St. Kitts and Nevis:** The Fisheries Department of St. Kitts and Nevis is projected to generate over $15 million in revenue in 2024, thanks to ongoing investments that are yielding positive results. Agriculture Minister Samal Duggins provided details on this progress and emphasised that continued government support is essential for driving success in this sector.
During his remarks, Minister Duggins noted that discussions with local fisherfolk highlighted the necessity for upgrades to their facilities to enhance productivity and create a more supportive working environment.
In response to these needs, the government, through the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources, initiated a major renovation of the fisheries complexes in Basseterre and Old Road. These upgrades included significant structural enhancements, a refreshed ambience, and new equipment, notably the long-awaited ice machine in Old Road and a fully operational fish depot.
Minister Duggins highlighted that these changes have positively impacted the profitability and sustainability of the fisheries industry, which recorded an intake of over $15 million last year—the highest in the past decade.
He also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the fisherfolk of St. Kitts and Nevis, stating that investments will continue to foster the growth and resilience of the fisheries sector.
Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Marine Resources has announced a week of activities to celebrate the upcoming annual World Fisheries Day on November 21st, 2024. The Department encourages the community to participate in recognising the significance of sustainable fisheries and marine conservation.
