BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JUNE 18TH 2013 (CUOPM) – Feature stories on St. Kitts and Nevis have won Best Feature Article in a Trade Publication and Best Online Article at the Caribbean Media Awards Luncheon in New York on Thursday, June 6.
The stories earned two of only eight awards presented at the Awards Ceremony, one of the most highly anticipated events held during the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Caribbean Week in New York from June 1-8, 2013.
“For our Federation to be the topic of two winning Caribbean travel articles this year is a significant achievement and a testament to the many wonderful travel experiences we have to offer our visitors on both islands,” said Senator the Hon. Ricky Skerritt, Federal Minister of Tourism and International Transport.
Nevis’ Deputy Premier, Mark Brantley, said, “I am proud to congratulate these two truly outstanding Caribbean journalists on their well-earned wins for so creatively telling the stories of their island experiences.”
Gay Nagle Myers’ story entitled, “Sweet Retreat on St. Kitts and Nevis,” appeared in the trade publication Travel Weekly in print and online in December 2012. It included a number of the destination’s top attractions such as Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, the Caribelle Batik factory at Romney Manor, the Frigate Bay Strip and the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, to name just a few.
One of St. Kitts’ new developments, Kittitian Hill, was prominently featured and two sidebars outlined “Gay’s Tips” of things to see and do on the twin islands as well as interesting facts about the destination. Gay Nagle Myers is Caribbean Editor for Travel Weekly.
The Caribbean Journal article entitled, “Sea Turtles – a Special Kind of Tourist at the Four Seasons Nevis,” was penned by its publisher, Alexander Britell, and appeared on August 7, 2012.
The story focused on the visit of a hawksbill turtle named Pinney and the work being done by Nevis Turtle Group in partnership with the Four Seasons Resort Nevis and the global Sea Turtle Conservancy to watch, study, tag and ultimately help protect the endangered turtles nesting on Nevis and in the Eastern Caribbean.
The winners of the awards, which honor the best in Caribbean travel journalism, were selected from among 90 total entries received. Both journalists visited St. Kitts & Nevis as part of the press group for the CTO’s State of the Industry Conference in October 2012 and were treated to island tours. Alexander Britell was also hosted for a press trip by the Four Seasons Resort Nevis earlier in 2012.
