St. Kitts and Nevis Delegation Champions Sustainable Solutions at UNEA-6

[St. Kitts and Nevis  – The sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) is set to convene from February 26 to March 1, 2024, at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. This critical assembly considered the world’s top decision-making body on environmental issues, will gather Heads of State along with over 5,000 representatives from government, civil society, and the private sector to address pressing environmental challenges that threaten the planet’s well-being.

UNEA-6 will focus on leveraging multilateral cooperation to tackle the triple planetary climate change crisis, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Backed by robust scientific evidence and political commitment, the assembly aims to foster inclusive and united action across nations, ensuring the protection of the natural world and the improvement of human lives globally.

Representing St. Kitts and Nevis at UNEA-6 are:

The Honourable Dr Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment, who leads the delegation; Dr Marcus L Natta, Cabinet Secretary and Global Environment Facility (GEF) Political Focal Point; and Mr Eavin Parry, Environmental Officer II, Department of Environment, serving as the Technical Lead.

The delegation from St. Kitts and Nevis is poised to play an active role in UNEA-6, engaging in a series of pivotal events:

National Statement: Dr. Joyelle Clarke will deliver a robust national statement during the high-level session, representing the voices and concerns of St. Kitts and Nevis on the global stage.
Leadership Dialogue: Dr. Clarke will engage in two leadership dialogues, one focusing on the role of science, data, and digitalization in accelerating the transition towards sustainability, and the other examining the capacity of the global financial system to address climate change, nature loss, and pollution effectively.
SIDS Reception/Exhibition Side Event: Dr. Clarke will deliver a statement at the Side Event dedicated to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities faced by countries like St. Kitts and Nevis.
Additionally, the St. Kitts and Nevis delegation is expected to conduct several bilateral meetings with countries and international organizations to advance the national environmental and sustainability interests, fostering collaborative efforts towards shared goals and priorities.
