The Gingerland Secondary School held a career fair on Wednesday 6th February at the school’s compound.
Among the many business and other entities available to make presentations to the students, were representatives from the Sports Department, led by Director of Sports on Nevis, Mr. Jamir Claxton.
Claxton paused from his busy schedule long enough to explain that they were there to educate the students about the many job and other opportunities available through sports.
He indicated that outside of the Financial industry, the Sports industry is the fastest growing industry in the world.
He used two of his colleagues who were present, as glowing examples of persons making a name for themselves, through sports.
Coach Kimbel Ward, who is one of the top FIFA referees in the entire world and who hails from Bath Village and Kelvin Bramble, Sports officer and Basketball coach, who was fortunate to receive higher education in the USA, via a Basketball scholarship.
He noted that many persons may not be able to make it through life as a top athletes, but may become skilled in a sports related area and make it big in that particular field.
For example, if you don’t make it as a top cricketer, there are other avenues such as:
Umpiring (Carl Tuckett is currently a top umpire in the region); Video Analyst (Trent Sargeant in St. Kitts); Coach (Stuart Williams); Commentators; Camera personnel; Physiotherapists (as was the case with Virgil Browne) etc.
