By Curtis Morton
Gingerland—Nevis—Miss Silian Elliot of Rawlins Village celebrated her 90th birthday at her Rawlins home on Tuesday 7th January, surrounded by family members and friends.
The brief ceremony was chaired by Miss Vinetta Hobson Moven who pointed to certain aspects of the life of the celebrant. She pointed to her years as a farmer and vendor and noted that she raised a number of children and grand children as a single parent.
She also noted that the celebrant is also a highly spiritual individual and was very active in the life of her church prior to her current illness.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Social Development was Deputy Director at the Social Services Department, Ms Joyce Moven, who also presented a plaque on behalf of the Ministry and a fruit basket, presented in partnership with City Drug Store.
She apologized for the absence of the Hon. Hazel Brandy-Williams who was on another appointment but passed on her best wishes to Miss Elliot. She also lauded the efforts of her children and the Care Givers who work in the area, for the wonderful care extended to the birthday lady.
Well known local Attorney, Miss Barbara Hardtman also spoke to the loving care she and her brother Greg received at the hands of Miss Elliot during their youthful years.
She noted that because the celebrant was a close friend of her mother, a relationship was developed and she proved to be a strict disciplinarian to them and the household also benefitted in a huge way due to what she referred to as PRAGGING, as Miss Elliot would bring multiple goodies from her produce as a farmer.
Family friend Mrs. Yvonne Fahie also had high praise for the work ethics and spirituality of the celebrant and thanked her for her assistance to her family through the years.
Also speaking on behalf of the family, were daughters, Olinda Elliot and Myrthlyn Elliot who showered their Mom with praise for her contributions in raising them and her contribution to the society at large.
Miss Elliot when asked if she had anything to say, used the opportunity to praise her God.
