Salary Increase: A Commitment to Long-Term Stability and Empowerment

**BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (PMO)—** During a discussion on WINN FM’s Inside the News program, Prime Minister Hon. Dr Terrance Drew clarified the government’s decision to implement an 8% salary increase for civil servants. He emphasised that this decision was motivated by a commitment to enhancing financial stability and economic empowerment rather than being linked to the notion of a “double salary.”

Prime Minister Drew stated that the increase is part of a broader strategy aimed at investing in people and ensuring sustainable financial benefits for civil servants and their families.

“Our focus is on the people—ensuring stability, security, and creating long-term opportunities for them to thrive,” he said.

While the 8% increase effectively amounts to an additional month’s pay for a year, the Prime Minister stressed that the intention was not to compare it to traditional ‘double salaries.’ Instead, the aim is to provide consistent and sustainable financial advantages.

“This increase empowers civil servants every month, positively affecting their ability to save, invest, and plan for the future,” PM Drew explained.

The salary adjustment reflects the government’s people-centred approach, which delivers tangible long-term benefits for workers:

1. The increase enhances contributions to Social Security, resulting in higher pensions upon retirement.
2. With a higher base salary, civil servants can access better loan terms and financing options, enabling them to invest in housing, education, and other priorities.
3. Civil servants are now eligible for increased benefits, including sick leave, maternity leave, and disability payments, which further solidifies their financial security.

“This approach provides greater stability and security for workers, allowing them to achieve a stronger financial footing. We are building a future where our workforce feels supported and empowered. Our focus will always be on our people—not on political optics or short-term gains,” he added.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister reiterated that the government’s policies are designed to foster growth, stability, and security for civil servants and their families. “Our goal is to ensure that every citizen experiences the benefits of a strong and resilient economy. This increase reflects our commitment to that aim.”
