RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES ARE CRITICAL FOR ST. KITTS AND NEVIS, SAYS PM HARRIS Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 22, 2015 (SKNIS)

“Renewable energy resources will play a critical role in the sustainable development, economic growth and diversification of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis” said Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris during the National Consultation on the Economy held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on Thursday, October 22.

Dr. Harris noted that plans are already in place to address this matter.

“With regards to energy – a real concern for individuals and businesses alike – a comprehensive approach will be adopted to address issues such as reliability of intermittent resources, renewable energy and environmental issues,” Dr. Harris said, noting that a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Geothermal Exploration in St. Kitts was signed as a first step towards realizing the vision for bringing relief to energy consumers.”

He further stated that the Federal Government is cognizant of the geothermal energy on the sister island of Nevis.

“We are not in competition,” he said. “We are collaborating to ensure the largest possible supply of this resource is available to our Federation, not just to meet modest energy needs but as a foreign exchange earner, provider of new jobs, high incomes and multiplicity of opportunities for our people.”

Prime Minister Harris said like any other important initiative, there must be a strategy or plan of action.

“We will implement the National Energy Policy and make the necessary changes to the regulatory framework and institutional environment of the energy sector,” he said.
