NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (September 24, 2013) — Premier of Nevis Hon. Vance Amory urged police officers stationed at the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force Nevis Division to hold in their highest regard service with distinction to the nation.
Mr. Amory was at the time raising a toast to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis on the occasion of its 30th anniversary of Independence, at a small ceremony hosted by the Police Division in collaboration with the Nevis Island Administration on September 19, 2013.
“I want to say to all of us that we need citizens of our country to hold in the highest regard service to our country. I think this is what will make the difference between a successful, a progressive nation, if all of us, regardless of the station we hold, decide that we will serve and serve with distinction. I think that will make a difference to the outcome and the happiness, the stability, the productivity of our country,” he said.
Mr. Amory stated that at times persons were of the view that one could only serve the nation if he were appointed to high office but that was far from the truth.
“Sometimes we think that we can only serve if we are appointed to high office, it’s not so … I am simply saying to us that as a nation, we need to acquire, develop and demonstrate the attitude and the attribute of service so that our country can benefit and that we can live up to the motto of our country, ‘Country Above Self’.
“As we celebrate our 30th anniversary I want us each to individually determine if we have done the best that we could for our country and this has nothing to do with our political aspirations and our political bias or political affiliation. It is whether or not the country that gave us birth, the country which gave us sucker, the country to which we pledge allegiance, whether we have to that country given our heart, our minds and our talents in the way that we should or are we among those who seek by their very energy, to destroy and undermine the progress which is made,” he said.
The Premier explained that it was important to look at those things since there were those who were determined to derail the gains made by the nation.
“We need to look at that because if each time we make steps forward, we found that there are those pulling us steps back that we are not going anywhere and today as we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we made gains. We have done well as a small country but we could do better and it means that all of us have to pledge our hearts and minds to the future development of our country…
“Ladies and gentlemen, fellow citizens, I want us then to raise our glasses to a toast to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and to the Nevis Island Administration and to all the people of our beloved country and help us to pledge our hearts, our minds and our bodies to the betterment of our country. To St. Kitts and Nevis and all of the good things which you want to inherit,” he said.
