BIO: FILAMENA DAY

This remarkable young lady has had a well traveled journey during her short life, epitomizing the Strong, Focused, Dedicated, Cultured and Humble vision that we associate with our Caribbean women. Filamena Day was born in Castries St. Lucia on June 06, 1991 to Juliana and Marcus Day. She grew up with two younger siblings in a household where charity and care for the less fortunate was a daily common occurrence. One of her fondest memories is packing Christmas hampers with her father, to be distributed to people living with HIV to supplement their nutritional needs.

Always a diligent student, she worked hard to obtain excellent grades and was more than just academically excellent. From the tender age of six, she displayed a passion for the arts and sporting activities and enrolled in swimming, brownies, karate and music (pan and piano). Her mother constantly encouraged her to take part in many diverse activities in the spirit of wanting her to experience the most she could. She enrolled in Girl Guides and Peer Helping. Her hard work and constant involvement was recognized when she was chosen to represent St. Lucia as the Girl Guide Ambassador in Costa Rica for the 100th Anniversary Celebrations at the World Association of Girl Guides.

No stranger to the world of sports Filamena became the Captain of her School Swim Team and graduated as the female swimmer of the year. After obtaining nine (9) CXC qualifications she graduated from the Leon Hess Secondary School and then enrolled in the International School of Saint Lucia for a two year university preparatory programme; upon graduating Filamena received the Science and Service award and had the honour of delivering the Valedictorian Address. In addition to a busy academic life, Filamena worked diligently to attain her qualifications as a swim coach and her CPR Certification. Motivated to put her qualifications to work, she became the youngest Junior National Coach for the 2008 Saint Lucia National Swim Team and represented St. Lucia at the 2008 World Lifesaving Championships in Germany.

Always searching for a new challenge Filamena ventured into the world of pageantry and won her very first pageant Miss Teen La Clery, she placed 3rd Runner up at the 2010 Miss Independence, 1st Runner up at the 2010 National Carnival Queen and Best Interview award. She is the 2012 Miss Caribbean Cuba, achieving awards for Best Costume, Best Dress, Best Interview and People’s Choice.

In keeping with the desire to help and give back to society and humanity, Filamena chose a career in Medicine and in 2010 she earned a full scholarship to the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba. She began her Medical studies in September 2010. She continues to develop her goals and does so with the constant inspiration, her favourite quote being “whatever you vividly imagine, adherently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon, must inevitably come to pass.”

Filamena embraces the challenge and the opportunity to represent her country at the 2013 Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant and is excited to bring to St. Kitts & Nevis the rich culture and true essence of St. Lucia.
