BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, AUGUST 8TH 2014 (CUOPM) – The National Sports Agenda being executed by the Federation’s Minister of Sports, the Hon. Glenn Phillip, continues to broaden the opportunities for young people as well as to build community spirit through family members and fans who rally around the sons and daughters of the respective communities.
Minister Phillip, who is also minister of Youth Empowerment and Information and Communication Technology, speaking at a recent Conversation for Progress town hall meeting, said the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party administration, continues to upgrade and maintain all sporting facilities “from the advanced sporting venues of the Warner Park and the Silver Jubilee Stadium to the playfields all around the island.”
He said that the Ministry of Sport has made a commitment to keep sporting facilities in tip- top shape.
“We understand that the recreation of our people helps to promote healthy and happy lifestyles. More time spent on the basketball or netball court; more time spent playing cricket or football; more time spent in physical exercise and social interaction all help to build stronger communities and a more progressive country. These are done through sports right here in this federation of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Mr. Phillip.
“We have come to discuss how mega projects in sport development can benefit the common man and woman in the long and short terms. In our conversation, we must evaluate how a FIFA Technical Centre in Stapleton Estate can and will be of benefit to the common man of Conaree, Gillard Meadows, Parray’s and Monkey Hill and all of St. Kitts and Nevis. We shall also consider how we can improve lighting at Warner Park and the impact and the experience on the men and women who come to Basseterre to sell and buy and do business on a daily basis?,” said the Sports minister
He said his Ministry of Sports has embarked on discussing “how we can have more organised grassroots sporting activities across the Federation in both the traditional and new sporting disciplines.”
“We may not venture into building a bobsled team, but we shall have a conversation that seeks to broaden the minds of our people as we advance the image of St. Kitts and Nevis through sport, just like Antoine Adams of Cayon and the other athletes currently representing the Federation at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
