Minister of Agriculture Celebrates Major Developments In Poultry Farming as Hatchery Facility Nears Completion in Just One Year
Basseterre, St. Kitts — The Minister responsible for Agriculture, Hon. Samal Duggins, is thrilled to announce significant progress in the construction of the Poultry Hatchery facility, a cornerstone of the St. Kitts and Nevis Layer Chicken Industry Sustainable Development Project. This transformative initiative, undertaken in partnership with the Taiwanese government, is poised to enhance the agricultural sector, provide substantial economic benefits, and ensure greater food security for the nation.
“During my last visit, the groundwork was just beginning. Today, I am immensely proud to see the main structure of the hatchery facility complete, with state-of-the-art incubation and hatchery equipment being installed. Electrical and water systems are being finalized, ensuring efficient and sustainable operation,” the Minister stated.
The project commenced following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last June, marking one year since its inception. The completion of this project marks a significant milestone for the poultry sector, which commands the largest share of national expenditure and presents vast opportunities for local farmers. The new hatchery will address the existing gap in egg production, enabling the nation to achieve 100% efficiency. Farmers will now have a reliable source of day-old birds, significantly bolstering local egg production capabilities.
“This project is not just about building infrastructure; it’s about building a future where St. Kitts and Nevis can be self-sufficient in food production. Here’s to being food secure by 2025 and beyond!” the Minister added.
