CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS – Disaster Management chief on Nevis, Mr. Brian Dyer has confirmed that minimal damage was sustained during a freak storm that hit Nevis and nearby islands, during the early hours of Tuesday 14th January.
Sometime after 12.30 am on Tuesday morning, the island was hit heavy winds, rain and occasional lightning. Some persons even wondered if a hurricane had sneaked up on the island unannounced.
The uncanny weather conditions were precipitated by a passing high-pressure system.
According to Dyer, the NEVLEC grid was affected in some way and that caused the electricity supply to be disrupted for an extended period. Outside of that, there were no reports of damage to houses or business places and no loss of life was reported.
Dyer used the opportunity to remind citizens and residents to always be alert and ready to deal with such emergency situations.
