JOHN’S, Antigua- Marlon Samuels slammed his first century of the Super50 Cup as he had a good time with both bat and ball as his team the Leeward Islands Hurricanes defeated Jamaica Scorpions by 23 runs to remain unbeaten in Group B.
Kieran Powell won his second toss and elected once again to bat first. The captain and Montcin Hodge started the innings cautiously but took advantage of Andre Russell as they combined for 2 sixes and 13 fours in a partnership of 83 before Chris Gayle got the breakthrough, removing Powell for 44.
In came Marlon Samuels and continued where his captain left off. He smashed some lofty blows around the scenic Coolidge Cricket Ground, as he raced to 7,000 first class runs. He finished the innings on 106 not out from 90 balls.
Devon Thomas added a quick 27 after Hodge was out for 61. No heroics for Rahkeem Cornwall in this match as he was caught and bowled by Gayle for 22.
The Leeward Islands Hurricanes finished their 50 overs on 287/5. Chris Gayle had the best bowling figures for the Scorpions, taking 2/41 from 9 overs.
Chris Gayle and Chadwick Walton opened the scoring for the Scorpions, with Walton taking charge in getting to the target. He became the first of Justin Athanaze’s three wickets, when he fell for 30.
Gayle then turned up the flare and he smashed 4 sixes and 4 fours much to the entertainment of the Coolidge crowd. But once again, Athanaze was the man, getting Gayle caught in the deep for 44.
Andre Russell came in and showed he meant business in getting his team over the line and within the required run-rate. He went after the Hurricanes bowling, taking them around the Coolidge Cricket Ground for 6 sixes and 4 fours on his way to a top-score of 76, before Shino Berridge had him going after another big hit.
Jamaica Scorpions reached 264/9 from their 50 overs. Bowling for the Hurricanes, Justin Athanaze finished with 3/28, while Akeal Hosein had 2/33.
JAGUARS vs USA
In the first match of the day, USA Cricket won the toss and batted first against Guyana Jaguars. They posted 188/8 from their 50 overs. Xavier Marshall took a starring role, top-scoring with 51 followed by Elmore Hutchinson with 45.
Veerasammy Permaul spun his way to 2/29 from his 10 overs. Keemo Paul took 2/32 while Raymon Reifer had 2/43.
Shimron Hetmyer led his team’s charge with an unbeaten 103 from 69 balls. He hammered the USA’s bowling for 7 sixes and8 fours on the way to his ton.
Captain Leon Johnson finished on 50 not out, as the Jaguars comfortably reached their target. Finishing the match on 191/2 in 32.2 overs.
