Charlestown-Nevis-As part of the week of activities currently being held by the Manning’s Seventh Day Adventist Church, in celebration of its 90th year of existence, a Health fair was held at the Villa Grounds in Charlestown, on Monday 27th August.
Speaking to the media, one of the chief coordinators of the event, Mr. Odell Bussue, indicated that the health fair was open to all members of the general public and highlighted the areas of health checks available on the day. He noted a special concern over the high incidences of diabetes and hypertension on the island and stated that special attention would be paid to those areas.
The checks included: High blood pressure checks; blood sugar checks; hemoglobin; body mass index (BMI) and there was also a Massage Therapist on hand, conducting free massages.
One of the lead persons on the day, was Dr. Avelyn Quinland, formerly Browne, who is a distinguished Pediatrician in the USA and who noted that she dealt mainly with children from birth to age 18.
She pointed out that she had a real concern for children with developmental problems and indicated that once such problems are diagnosed in the USA, the affected children can be treated by a specific Specialist Doctor, but such is not yet the case in Nevis.
Also on hand, was Minister of Health, Hon. Hazel Brandy- Williams, who paid tribute to the Pastors and members of the Manning’s SDA church, for 90 years of service to the community.
She applauded her former classmate, Dr. Quinland, for establishing herself as a distinguished doctor and commended the church for its continued focus on the health message.
The Health fair commenced just after 9 am and went down until after 5 pm.
