President of the Nevis Football Association George BRIGO Meade confirmed on Thursday that the local Football league will commence this coming Sunday-25th August.
The action will begin at 5 pm with an official opening ceremony and this will be followed by a much anticipated clash for the SLYBO cup between Slybo Stoney Grove Strikers out of Nevis and SL Horsfords St.Paul’s out of St.Kitts.
Treasurer of the Association, John Guilbert noted that spectators will only pay $5.00 at the gate and special arrangements will be made with the vendors for the entire season with one of the restrictions being that they won’t be able to compete with similar products sold at the Association’s bar.
The first league to be played will be the LEGENDS CUP and the person to be honoured is from the St.Thomas’ Parish and his name will be revealed in due course. The Legend’s cup will conclude towards the end of September and immediately after that the regular local league will commence and that will conclude in February or March of 2014, with a break towards the end of December.
Both men also tackled the question about the legitimacy of their Association as it is felt in some quarters that an annual general meeting is overdue and ought to be held before the league commences.
They both indicated that they are guided by the constitution and that everything is in place as they commence the local league.
Football enthusiast and former top cop Joseph Liburd opined that the current Association is on the correct path. He indicated that the constitution states that an executive can only be in position for a maximum of three years but does not state that an election must be held every three years and noted that the new executive has only been in place for under one year.
He equated it to the constitution that guides the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis which allows for Governments to remain in power for a maximum of five years but does not stipulate that an election must be held every five years.
It must however be noted that there are differing views coming from other quarters.
However, the local league returns to the ET Willet Park on Sunday, after a break of about two years.
