By: The Department of Environment
Unlawful or illegal dumping is a widespread problem experienced globally paired with many adverse and harmful environmental consequences, especially in developing and lesser developed countries.
Recently, the frequency of reports related to illegal dumping has increased in St Kitts and Nevis and according to the Director of the Department of Environment, it has become an increasing concern. In an appeal to the public, he encouraged partnerships with the Department to combat illegal dumping.
Illegal dumping is considered the disposal of trash generated at one location and disposed of at another location without legal permission. Therefore, there is a dire need for proper disposal and management of waste.
Waste Management can be a shared responsibility between the government and its related institutions like the St. Kitts Solid Waste Management Corporation, and citizens. Additionally, many people are not aware of the serious and eventual harm that this practice may cause. Changing our mindset and developing climate-friendly practices is necessary to eradicate this growing issue within the country. The following are some results of illegal dumping and maybe an issue you are currently facing.
Impact of illegal dumping on the environment
The environment is defined as everything around us including human beings. So, without a doubt, the damage inflicted on the environment by illegal dumping, in turn affects us. Although some impact may not be seen immediately, it becomes alarmingly evident, overtime.
• The dumping of waste in unauthorized areas may cause contamination of land and water resources such as aquifers and river passageways. These pollutants may cause indirect illness to humans, animals, and other forms of biodiversity.
• Pest infestation is a typical result of illegal dumping that plagues settlements. The unhealthy practice provides a breeding ground for rodents, mosquitoes, and cockroaches. These pests are carriers of illnesses that can affect the population’s health, with the worst-case scenario resulting in death.
• The natural beauty of an area is also spoiled by the unlawful dumping of garbage. Generally, it is believed that a person’s mental health and even attitude towards the environment can be affected. However, gradually, with the uptick in illegal dumping and the perception that this grave situation is not dealt with seriously, it may be safe to conclude that acceptance and tolerance has become the social norm.
