On a night when low scores appeared to be the norm, SDA Jets came up against the GT United team, in a ‘must-win’ encounter, as the Sports Department/Development Bank tape ball cricket league continued, at the ET Willet Park, on Sunday, October 27.
GT United won the toss and elected to send the Jets in to bat first. With a ball making some extraordinary movements, Jets was soon in trouble and a number of the early batsmen were actually bowled. An unconfirmed source has since indicated that the ball was heavily taped on one side, which allowed for unusual swing.
The Jets eventually crawled to 46 from the allotted 10 overs.
Even though the ball did not make similar movements, the Jets bowlers generally held a tight rein on the GT United batsmen. Anand looked good until he was bowled by Curtis Morton Jr and thereafter, there was tension in the game, as it came down to the final over before the GT United managed to score the winning run.
Three teams have so far qualified for the semifinals: Rawlins, All-stars and GT United. There are three teams vying for the final spot: Calypso, Easterns and SDA Jets all on 6 points.
On Wednesday, October 30th, at 5.30 pm, Calypso will engage Highlights in the final preliminary match. If Calypso wins, then they will go to 9 points and take the final spot in the semis, but if they lose, then the scorers will have the headache of calculating overall run rates, in order to determine the final spot between Calypso, Jets, and Easterns. It all leads to an intriguing finale.
