A former police officer will stand trial for the death of another police officer, who died in 2016 a month after being shot while responding to a larceny report.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Andre Mitchell, confirmed that Dijon Warner, who was deported from the United States in November of last year after serving a five-year sentence, has now been charged with the death of police officer Brian Pacquette.
“The person involved in that matter has been committed to stand trial. The matter has gone through the committal hearing stage and is now before the High Court,” Mitchell said.
Pacquette, 34, was shot in the leg while responding to a larceny report on June 23, 2016. He was flown to Trinidad and Tobago for treatment, where his leg was amputated. However, he died on July 18, 2016. His mother, Yvonne Harris, had taken to social media demanding justice for her son.
In 2018, a wanted bulletin was issued for Warner on a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of Pacquette, but he had fled to the United States in 2016.
On November 29, 2023, Warner was deported to St Kitts and Nevis, where he was immediately taken into police custody.
“He arrived at the Robert L Bradshaw International Airport on November 29, 2023, after serving a five-year sentence in the US. Mr. Warner was taken into police custody and transported to the Basseterre Police Station, where he was charged on November 29, 2023,” the police said in a statement.
