First there were six and then there were four.
According to Manager of the Youth and Sports Department’s Eagles Basketball Club, Miss Jekida Thomas, the youthful team travelled to St. Eustatius and participated in an under 21 Basketball tournament there, which was held between the 3rd and 5th of August.
It was officially dubbed, the ROCK the Rim tournament, based on the name of the organizers.
Coach of the team, Jeffrey Lewis, explained that originally six teams were registered but for whatever reason, only four teams showed up: Nevis; St.Kitts; St. Maarten and host team, St. Eustatius.
The duo explained that the youthful Nevis team, eventually placed third overall.
In game one, versus St.Maarten, Eagles lost by 9 points.
In game two, versus home team St. Eustatius, Nevis lost by a mere 1 point.
In game three, versus St.Maarten once again, Eagles lost in another keenly contested encounter and in the final game versus sister isle, St. Kitts, Eagles won by 6 points.
The two officials, lauded the general treatment that the team received in St. Eustatius, which included accommodation at the Secondary School there; an island tour, eating at various restaurants etc. They were also very impressed with the Basketball Complex on the island.
They noted that the players were generally well behaved and represented the island well, as true ambassadors.
They expressed thanks to the Nevis Island Administration, through the Youth and Sports department; the parents; management team and the players, for a successful trip to and from St. Eustatius.
Going forward, the team is looking towards an upcoming youth tournament, slated for St.Maarten and are keenly awaiting the commencement of the local league.
