Drought Awareness‏

Based on the most recent analysis of the drought situation across the region, it is necessary to indicate that St. Kitts-Nevis will be under a drought warning up to the end of October. This therefore, will lead to a wet season with totals below the average of what we are normally accustomed to, also the analyses are indicating warmer than normal temperatures.
The indications at this time are suggesting a slight improvement as we move to the end of the wet season (end of November). The main driver of this drought situation is the El Nino that is moderate at this time and according to some models may increase in severity as the wet season continues.
This therefore, will lead to a wet season with totals below the average of what we are normally accustomed to, also the analyses are indicating warmer than normal temperatures. This will increase the evapo-transpiration rate and thus leading to less available water to replenish to water table. The implications of this will be far reaching and would affect  sectors including the water services, agriculture among others. Therefore, it is advisable that the necessary preparations and precautions be instituted as this drought situation continues.
