Diamond League victory for Sha’Carri Richardson over Shericka Jackson
United States of America's Sha'Carri Richardson
United States of America’s (USA) Sha’Carri Richardson maintained her dominance over Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson this season in the clash of the two fastest women over the 100 metres earlier today at the Siliesa Kamila Skolimowska Diamond League in Poland.
Richardson came out on top, winning in 10.76 seconds to Jackson’s 10.78, with Ewa Swoboda of Poland third in a personal best 10.94 seconds as Jamaica’s Shashalee Forbes ended ninth in 11.18 seconds.
In what was a highly anticipated clash after Jackson clocked a world-leading 10.65 seconds a week earlier at Jamaica’s National Senior Championships (Trials) and Richardson 10.71 seconds in her first round at the USA’s National Championships, expectation was high, as many believed that there would have been a sub-10.6 seconds for the winner.
Despite Jackson taking the early lead, the fast-finishing Richardson prevailed for her second win over Jackson this season.
Natoya Goule-Toppin and Tyler Mason were the other Jamaicans to finish in the top three in their respective events.
Goule-Toppin clocked a season-best 1:57.90 minutes for third behind winner Mary Morra of the USA, who did a season-best and world-leading 1:56.85 minutes.
Mason ended third in the men’s 110 metres hurdles in 13.29 seconds.
Candice McLeod finished fourth in the women’s 400 metres in a season-best of 50.19 seconds, with Yohan Blake also ending fourth in the men’s 100 metres in 10.01 seconds as Ackeem Blake was seventh in 10.15 seconds. Akani Simbine of South Africa won in 9.97 seconds.
Megan Tapper was also fourth in the women’s 100 metres hurdles in 12.49 seconds, while Danielle Williams was fifth in a season-best 12.55 seconds.
National champion Shanieka Ricketts was fifth in the women’s triple jump with a season-best 14.56 metres, while Lamara Distin finished sixth in the women’s high jump with 1.89 metres.
