The curtains came down on the first exciting week of summer camps, hosted by the Youth and Sports Department, on Friday 20th July.
At the Grell Hull-Stevens Netball Complex, over 40 young lasses climaxed a week of learning the basic skills of Netball, with match simulation exercises.
It was obvious that they did not quite get all of the rules together in one week, as there was a lot of STEPPING and other infringements but it was also obvious that the young ladies and their parents and other family members who showed up, were quite enthused about the game.
Every good pass and every goal (even though they were not very regular), was cheered on enthusiastically.
As in most cases when they have such training sessions, there were a few players who stood out and the coaches are adamant that with more training on a regular basis, Netball still has hope in Nevis.
The children were given letters by the coaches, seeking the permission of their parents, to have them continue in the learning of the game.
At the ET Willet Park, another forty plus children, climaxed their one week session in learning the basic skills of Cricket.
They also had match simulations as well and evn though it was clear that the ICC rule as regards the allowed degrees for the bending of the arm, may have been brought into question, the coaches noted that it was only one week and they learnt a lot and some of them showed serious potential for the future.
At the end of the short matches, the children gathered into the main pavilion area and received a motivational speech from no less a person than Keith Lloyd Thomas Arthurton, former West Indies player, who vowed to continue to give back to the development of the game in Nevis (his island of birth).
Today, Monday 23rd July begins another exciting chapter of the summer camps for the youth of Nevis, as for the entire week, there will be GOLF at the Four Seasons Resort from 9 to 11 am; TENNIS at the Four Seasons Resort from 2 to 4 pm and Elite Basketball from 9 to 11 am, which will include some overseas coaches, at the Charlestown Primary School’s court, at Craddock Road.
