CSS Storms to Victory in Postal Relay Run
The now annual road relay, hosted by the Postal Services on Nevis, was held on Thursday 31st October.
The six teams participated in this year’s run namely St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force; Charlestown Secondary School; Labour Department; Health Department, Planning Department, and the Post Office.
Quite a number of spectators lined the roadsides at varying points of the route, which commenced in the vicinity of the Four Seasons Seasons Resort, travelled along the island main road, made a left turn up the Bypass road; another left by Franchette Manners’ business place into Hamilton, making a right turn by the Griffin’s residence down the Hamilton road, exiting onto the main road, heading down past the Hospital, making a right turn, towards the Charlestown Primary School, down through Craddock road, pass the Meade’s guest house, exiting onto the main road at Craddock road, then running on the Main road and culminating at the Post office.
It was a fast start, but it was soon evident that the Charlestown Secondary School athletes were in super form. Akadianto Willet handled the incline at the bypass road superbly and except for a fantastic finish by the Defence force, the first place was never really threatened.
The final results were:
Charlestown Secondary School – 20 mins 13 secs
Defense Force – 20 mins 59 secs
Labour Department – 23 mins 21 secs
Health Department – 24 mins 4 secs
Planning Department – 26 mins 30 secs
Post Office – 29 mins 40 secs
Also on hand, witnessing the climax of the event were Minister of Sports, Hon. Eric Evelyn and Minister responsible for the Postal Services, Hon. Spencer Brand.
When teased by Sylvester Pemberton that the Post office had come last, Minister Brand readily responded: “Well, at least, the mails were delivered!”
