Coaches From the Department of Sports Gain New Techniques to Successfully Mould Student-Athletes

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 09, 2022 (SKNIS): Approximately 30 coaches from the Department of Sports completed four days of capacity-building training designed to enhance their effectiveness in positively engaging student-athletes and successfully delivering instructional programmes in schools.

The workshop, organized by the Department of Sports, ran from September 05 to 08, 2022. It was held at the Media Centre of the Warner Park Cricket Stadium. Sessions ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and featured participation from coaches in cricket, football, volleyball, tennis, basketball, netball, and track and field.

The focus of the training was transforming the delivery of sports within schools through equitable access and continued developmental activities for coaches. The staging of the workshop was timed to coincide with the opening of schools on Wednesday, September 07, 2022.

Noah Mills facilitated the workshop. He delivered presentations on effective communication, self-management and conflict management. All three components were identified as essential social skills for coaches to achieve their desired outcomes. Mr. Mills also shared techniques on effective classroom/learning space management, teaching and learning strategies, performance management, training the trainer, and the strategic use of practical study materials.

At the closing ceremony on Thursday (September 08, 2022), Minister responsible for Sports, the Honourable Samal Duggins, congratulated the successful participants. He applauded them for their work with the young people, noting that sports encourage fitness that contributes to healthier lifestyles. The Minister said that this was essential for the health of the nation and the overall well-being of the future leaders and decision-makers of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Minister Duggins presented the coaches with certificates of completion at the closing ceremony.
