Charlestown-Nevis- In recognition of World Down’s Syndrome Day, the Principal and staff of the Cecely Browne Integrated School (CBIS), made a special presentation to Ms. Joan Bartlette, mother of the late Hazel Byron, who was incidentally affected by Down’s syndrome.
The presentation was made by Mrs. Jennifer Liburd, Principal of the institution.
Mrs Liburd pointed out that despite her health challenges, Hazel contributed significantly to the advancement of the school in its formative years and even brought home the first gold medal from the Special Olympics.
Ms. Bartlette in accepting the token of appreciation, admonished parents in general, to love their children and help them to grow and develop, no matter the challenges they may face.
She described Hazel as a ‘pioneer’ and noted that despite her challenges, she learnt to read properly and even eventually held a full-time job.
