PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
Test discard Nkrumah Bonner struck his second half-century of the Regional Super50 Cup but rain had the final say, condemning the fixture between Jamaica Scorpions and Trinidad and Tobago Red Force to a disappointing no-result here yesterday.
Sent in, the winless Scorpions posted 213 for nine in the contest reduced to 48 overs per side after rain halted the game at 197 for nine after 46 overs at Queen’s Park Oval.
The right-handed Bonner top-scored with 74 from 104 deliveries, counting seven fours to hold the innings together.
Captain Rovman Powell struck 48 from 69 balls while opener Chadwick Walton chipped in with a run-a-ball 23.
Scorpions were well placed for perhaps their best total of the campaign at 148 for three in the 34th over but off-spinner Sunil Narine (3-30) and left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein (3-34) snatched three-wicket hauls to derail the innings.
The uncomplicated run chase before unbeaten Red Force never even got started, however, as the adverse weather returned during the break, forcing officials to eventually abandon the encounter.
Attempting to end an otherwise title defense on a positive note, Scorpions started brightly with Walton lashing two fours and a six but he and opening partner Jermaine Blackwood (10) fell in the space of five deliveries to leaving the innings stumbling at 34 for two at the end of the eighth over.
Bonner then arrived at number three to anchor the best stand of the innings, adding 88 for the fourth wicket with Powell who struck two fours and a six.
Powell was staring at his second half-century of the tournament when he perished in the 34th over, edging an uncertain forward defensive prod at leg-spinner Yannnic Cariah to be taken by wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran.
Scorpions never recovered from his departure and lost six wickets for 47 runs, Bonner was finally ninth out at the start of the 45th, caught at long-on off Hosein.
