The very popular BATTLE OF THE FITTEST Basketball tournament, is set to be held in St.Maarten during the period, July 16th to 22nd.
The tournament will be played at the LB Scott Sports Auditorium.
Making the grand announcement, was PRO of the organizing committee, Mr. Curtlyn Warner, who is originally of St.Kitts but resides in St.Maarten.
In an interview with NTV Sports on Thursday, Warner indicated that the prestigious competition, now in its fourth year, has gained in popularity over the years and noted that some 14 islands have already indicated a willingness to participate this year.
He further indicated that there is only one team allowed per island and there are no specific regulations to determine the makeup of the team.
The team could be the domestic champion team or the island can choose to send a representative team, comprising of players from different teams.
The registration fee per team is $500.00 US and the prize money up for grabs is a whopping $5,000.00 US-winner takes all.
Warner indicated that the BVI team is the defending champion and is a very popular team with the St.Maarten fans but noted that his visit to the federation, came as a direct request from the fan base there, to ensure that teams from St.Kitts and Nevis were indeed involved in the tournament this year.
President of the St.Kitts- Nevis Basketball Association, Romain Tobias, indicated that St.Kitts will be sending a team and stated that champion team, St. Paul’s TUFKNOTS and second placer Ram’s HITTERS, have been informed and he is not certain whether or not the champion team will go it alone or if they will include other players.
President of the Nevis Amateur Basketball Association, Miss Wanda Parry, also indicated that Nevis is very much on board and stated that local champions from the last league, CG Rebels has been informed. She pointed to the possibility that the champion team will include other players from the island in their lineup.
