Today, Wednesday, April 2nd, is a much-anticipated day here on Nevis, as the island hosts the highly awaited event known as the “mini-Olympics.”
Top primary school athletes will compete in one field event, the ball throw, along with a variety of track events ranging from 100 meters to 1200 meters.
This year, ten schools will compete at the Nevis Athletic Stadium, starting at 11 AM today.
Contrary to earlier information, St. James’ Primary School will not be partnering with Montessori Primary School. Instead, St. James’ will compete independently, with one of their junior athletes, originally from the Philippines, expected to make a significant impact on the track.
The ten competing schools are: defending champions Charlestown Primary, Elizabeth Pemberton Primary, Maude Cross Preparatory, Ivor Walters Primary, St. Thomas’ Primary, VOJN, St. James’ Primary, Montessori, Nevis Academy, and Joycelyn Liburd Primary.
The school that earns the most gold medals will secure the championship title, adding an exciting element to the event, as all participating schools have athletes capable of winning gold on their best days.
According to Inspector Valentine Hodge, security will be extremely tight, and individuals found in violation of any rules will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.
