On Monday 3rd April, a press conference was held in relation to the upcoming Interprimary Sports meet, which will be held on Wednesday 5th April, at the Nevis Athletic Stadium.
The proceedings which were staged at the Disaster management conference room were skillfully guided by the chairperson, Aljay Newton.
After prayer by Minister of Sports Hon. Troy Liburd, several key individuals made remarks based on their specific field of expertise, which will help in making the grand event run smoothly and in a safe manner.
Representatives for the joint sponsors of this year’s event, Gulf Insurance and Bank of Nevis international, Darcelle Wiltshire and Rachel Ritfeld, both indicated that their respective organizations were happy to be on board with the signature event.
Chair of the steering committee, Ms. Nicolla Fraser gave an overview of what is to be expected on the big day; Austin Lescott spoke to matters of security and made the startling revelation that materials that can be used as weapons have been confiscated at previous meets from certain individuals. He also indicated that there have been incidences of marijuana smoking at previous meets, including in areas such as the bathrooms.
He explained that this time around, there will be zero tolerance for such behaviour
Mr. Javier Ottley represented the Ministry of Health and the Red Cross and explained the workings of the Red Cross at the meets and pointed to the fact that certain protocols have to be observed, even prior to attending to injured athletes.
Mr. Garfield Virgo of the technical committee explained the workings of the on-track events and gave an indication as to restricted areas.
Inspector James Stephens spoke about aspects of traffic control and the role of the Police on the day.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Mr. Kevin Barret, delivered the vote of thanks.
Apart from the officials at the head table, athletes and coaches from the competing schools were also present at the press briefing, which was also live-streamed.
