Antiguan cyclist, Andre Simon, passed away on Saturday, at a hospital in the United States.
The 36-year-old athlete and father of one was seriously injured on May 8, 2022 when he was struck by a speeding car while riding along the Sir George Walter Highway.
Simon received head trauma and internal bleeding as a result of the crash, which occurred on Mother’s Day.
This tragedy triggered a nationwide effort to raise funds to send him overseas for specialist care.
Several fundraisers were held across the nation in an effort to raise thousands for Simon’s medical bills which are said to have racked up to over EC $1 million.
It wasn’t until early July 2022 that Simon was transported to the TIRR Memorial Hospital in Texas for further treatment while in a coma.
A few weeks ago, Simon’s family said he was improving but he contracted and infection, which impacted his recovery.
Meanwhile, 40-year-old motorist Kenyatta Benjamin said to be responsible for Simon’s condition was on bail awaiting his committal hearing.
He is charged with driving dangerously but now that charge will have to be upgraded to the more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
