World First Aid Day was observed on Saturday, September 14th. The focus this year was on sports and sports personnel. Dejon Liburd of the St. Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society noted that the society has conducted sessions with coaches and other sports personnel to upgrade their first aid skills and educate them on injury prevention for athletes. He also mentioned an ongoing effort to educate school children and others in first aid.
Elquemedo Willet, the first West Indies test cricketer from Nevis and the Leeward Islands, praised the Red Cross and its first aiders for coming to his aid on February 18th, 2018, when he fell awkwardly at the ET Willet Park during a CSS sports meet. Despite urgings from nearby individuals to move him quickly, he appreciated the fact that the trained first aiders carried out a proper assessment of the situation and put on a neck brace before they moved him. He is confident that their care saved his life and urged young persons within the community to become members of the Red Cross Society and learn to administer first aid, so that they too can help save lives.
