The one-day series between the West Indies women’s team and the visiting South Africa women’s team, climaxed on Sunday 19th September, with the fifth and final one-day match.
On this occasion, the Windies women were led by Deandra Dottin and on the back of a fine partnership between Rashada Williams and Hayley Matthews, posted their biggest total of the series-192 for 5 in their 50 overs.
The South Africa women were off to a fine start, with Lizelle Lee again being the Windies women’s main tormentor with 61.
However, from 111 for no loss, they soon slumped to 143 for 6, due to some fine spin bowling by Sheneta Grimmond and Qiana Joseph.
The South African tail wagged and they brought the score right down to 192, with one ball remaining and one run needed for victory.
Dottin tightened her field and Mignon Du Preez struck ball sweetly off her pads.
Shabika Gajnabi, fielding at short square leg, dived to stop the ball superbly and got the return to Dottin at the non striker’s end, who removed the bails in the nick of time and Du Preez was run out.
The math was effectively tied.
The players returned to the field of play for the super over but the South Africans could only manage 6 runs from the over bowled by Dottin.
In response, the Windies women looked in trouble, with Dottin attempting a second run from the first ball and being run out.
However, Chedean Nation sealed the deal, with an emphatic four to the long on boundary.
