Jewel Andrew scored an unbeaten 64 from 60 balls as West Indies secured their first win at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa by beating Scotland by five wickets at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

Andrew, who had scored a sizzling ton against South Africa in their opening game on Friday, took on Scotland bowlers to rescue the West Indies Under-19.

Chasing a 206-run target, West Indies Under-19 reached home in 35.1 overs.

West Indies lost three wickets early in their chase. After adding a quick 22 for the first wicket, Adrian Weir (7) fell while trying to send Ruaridh McIntyre past covers. Stephan Pascal went ahead at run-a-ball, before falling for 26 while trying to dispatch Logan Briggs out of the ground.

A loose shot from Joshua Dorne off Ibrahim Faisal brought about his demise for 11, as West Indies slumped to 45 for three in 8.2 overs.

Mavendra Dindyal and Jordan Johnson, however, kept going for their shots, and ensured that West Indies went at over six runs an over.

Just as he was looking set for a big score, Dindyal was cleaned up for 29 when he tried to cut a delivery from Hegde. Qasim Khan then struck in the 17th over to send Johnson back for 24 and put Scotland ahead.

It was Andrew to the rescue again. His better-than-run-a-ball 50 in a 91-run stand with Nathan Edward (27 not out) helped West Indies open their account.

Earlier, Isai Thorne’s four for 46 helped West Indies Under-19 to restrict Scotland Under-19 to 205 for nine off their allotted 50 overs.

Jamie Dunk and Adi Hegde put up 89 for the first wicket to get Scotland off to a good start, hitting nine fours in their stand, and keeping their scoring rate at around four runs per over.

This solid start was eventually broken by Nathan Sealy when he had Hegde trapped lbw in the 22nd over for 32. Though Dunk (57) managed another good stand with Alec Price, and reached his 50 in the process, West Indies struck back towards the end of the second Powerplay.

Isai Thorne got Price (31), Owen Gould (5), and Uzair Ahmad (7) in the space of three overs to tilt the game West Indies’ way.

Bahadar Esakhiel (19) and Ruaridh McIntyre (17) ensured that Scotland just crossed the 200-run mark.

Scores in the match: Scotland Under-19 209-9 (50 overs); West Indies Under-19 206-5 (35.1/50 overs).
