Volcanoes Wrap Up Victory Over Scorpion While Pride Press CCC for Victory

The Windward Islands Volcanoes overpowered the Jamaica Scorpions’ home team to take a 9-wicket victory at Sabina Park on Day 3.

Chasing a 189-run lead in the Volcano’s first innings, the Scorpions posted 234 all out in their second innings a lead of 52 runs. The runs came from wicketkeeper-batsman Romaine Morris who knocked a valuable 68 off 76 deliveries and Nkrumah Bonner with 45 off 77, but their lead was not enough to withstand the Volcanoes bowling. Darius Martin picked up 4/85 and Shamar Springer had 2/30.

In their chase for victory, the Volcanoes lost their captain and opening batsman Kimani Melius for 4, but Jeremy Solozano 29 not out and Johann Jeremiah 22 not out took the Windwards to victory, earning them valuable Round 1 points. Marquino Mindley took the wicket of Melius to finish with figures of 1/13.

Over at Chedwin Park, Barbados Pride enforced the follow-on against the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC), who started Day 3 chasing the Pride’s first innings total of 344/8 declared. CCC were bowled out for 185, Shaqkere Parris 44 and Jonathan Carter 59, along with 28 from wicketkeeper Demario Richards, bolstered the CCC run chase. Left-arm orthodox Jomel Warrican spun a web on the CCC batsmen to finish with figures of 22.3-10-29-4 and Chaim-Alexis Holder’s off-break scalped him figures of 20-5-71-3, to leave CCC 159 runs short of the Pride’s first innings total.

With the enforced follow-on, CCC closed Day 3 with a second innings of 96/2, still some 63 runs away from leveling the scores, with one day remaining. Holder had Kirstan Kallicharan caught for 24, while Akeem Jordan bowled Shaqkere Parris for 5.

Meanwhile at Warner Park in St. Kitts, Leeward Islands Hurricanes Jeremiah Louis’ right-arm medium pace wreaked havoc on the West Indies Academy batters. Day 3 was interrupted several times with rainfall, but Louis did more damage than the water, as he scalped 5/29 as the West Indies Academy were all out for 177, a lead of 40 runs. Mbeki Joseph 42 and Joshua Bishop were the only Academy batters to show resistance to Louis’ pace and Javier Spencer’s left-arm quicks, which earned Spencer figures of 3/43.

In their second innings the Leewards finished Day 3 on 124/4 a lead of 84, thanks to a half-century from Mikyle Louis who played a patient 55 of 102 deliveries and 35 from Kofi James. Johann Layne had figures of 2/26 while his skipper Nyeem Young took 2/40 bowling for the West Indies Academy.

No play was possible in the match between Trinidad and Tobago Red Force and defending champions Guyana Harpy Eagles due to persistent rainfall and seepage of water at the Conaree Cricket Centre.
