The Gingerland Secondary School held its annual cross country events, on Monday 12th February.
All of the athletes commenced at the school’s gate and journeyed along the main road, through Hard Times; up the Rawlins road and exited to the main road at varying points, as the junior boys and senior boys’ routes were somewhat longer than the girls’.
Eden Howell took gold in the junior girls’, with her proud father, DADDY PLAY, snapping pictures, at the finish line.
Lleandre Huggins took gold in the junior boys’ and Jenessa Caines took gold in the senior girls’.
The race of the day however, was in the senior boys’ category.
Brothers Javari and Tinari Kelly, challenged for the top spot, for most of the race and mommy and former champion athlete at the school, Nadia Kelly, could be heard shouting: ‘Ah got a first and second.’
However, after the athletes entered the main road at Zetlands, the small figure of Tyri Jeffers, was seen forcing his way into second place but Javari Kelly refused to concede the lead.
At Market Shop, it was still Javari leading but Tyri was within sprinting distance and sprint he did.
It was a mad rush to the finish and despite the encouragement of his mom, Javari eventually raced the white flag, as Tyri rushed past him and effectively secured the gold medal, as the huge crowd on hand, cheered.
