The way I see it, we need to live each day as if it is our last.
There are too many sad stories for us to think otherwise.
It was yesterday, when I received an urgent call from a friend, asking me if I had a DRONE.
Being the ultimate pappy show, I immediately responded: ‘DRONE? The only time I nearly drone (drown), was when a lady held on to me at a church picnic at Cades Bay and that’s about ten years ago.’
Normally, he would have laughed. Shockingly, his voice maintained its serious tone and he continued: ‘Drone is right. We need the drone because we fear that a man down here probably drone (drown), near the Samuel Hunkins drive.’
I immediately got serious and told him that I would make contact with someone who had access to one.
Now up to the time of typing, the reports are conflicting. One report is indicating that the man was found, dead and another is saying that he was not found and the officials gave up the search.
Now, if the latter is true, let’s hope that his story will end as happily as the one with the lady, who recently threw herself off a cruise ship, after a heated argument with her boyfriend but miraculously survived in the murky, cold waters for approximately 10 hours.
Well I newa!
Now let’s put this story into context. If a man goes to the Bayfront, close to the Hunkin’s drive, he would have gone for that moment of relaxation and enjoyment, with the intention of returning to continue live as usual.
If he is dead, he did not expect to die at that particular time.
In Trinidad the other day, all of a sudden the earth started to violently rock and roll. Many buildings were badly damaged and even though there were no reports of death, people die in earthquakes of similar magnitude.
Unlike hurricanes, earthquakes don’t give five seconds’ warnings, much less, five days! So, people could have met their demise in an instant.
Just this morning, someone contacted me to tell me that they had found a lady dead in her house. The name that they called, rung a loud bell and I started to think about all of the persons I knew with that name and even checked on a neighbour of mine, to make sure that she was okay.
By the time of writing this, am still hoping that it was just a case of FAKE NEWS.
A few years ago, a friend of mine passed away suddenly at home in the USA. When I attended the funeral service, another friend told me of the last moments of her life.
They were together at her home, cooking up a storm (a real Nevis pot if you will) and chatting and laughing and talking about moving back home, one of these days etc.
They were at two separate ends of the kitchen and at this point in preparing for the pot, peeling stuff etc they were still conversing.
The friend said she said something and my other friend responded and laughed. My friend said something again and this time received no reponse. She did not look around but continued talking, thinking that the other fiend was just processing what she had said.
She continued talking and after not receiving a response again, she looked around and to her horror, saw our common friend sprawled out on the kitchen floor. The doctor later pronounced her DEAD.
Easy like that!
In the bible, the story is told about Hezekiah, the King who was struck with a terminal illness and was about to die. He cried unto the Lord and God in his wisdom, granted him another fifteen years.
Luke 12: 40
‘The Lord Hears Hezekiah’s Prayer
38 In those days Hezekiah was stricken with a terminal illness. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz visited him and told him, “This is what the Lord says, ‘Give instructions to your household, for you are about to die; you will not get well.’” 2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3 “Please, Lord. Remember how I have served you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion, and how I have carried out your will.” Then Hezekiah wept bitterly.
4 The Lord told Isaiah, 5 “Go and tell Hezekiah: ‘This is what the Lord God of your ancestor David says: “I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I will add fifteen years to your life, 6 and rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. I will shield this city.”’” 7 Isaiah replied, “This is your sign from the Lord confirming that the Lord will do what he has said: 8 Look, I will make the shadow go back ten steps on the stairs of Ahaz.” And then the shadow went back ten steps.”
Many of us will not get that chance and even after Hezekiah got that chance, he still messed up.
So, we do not know what will happen in the next second. It could be on a boat, an airplane; a car; a motorbike; just walking or running, or even in your bed sleeping, WE ALL HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH.
When death comes, HE REALLY COMES!
Now, the important thing is for us to give our hearts to God and make our ‘calling and election sure,’ on a daily basis. When we do that, whenever death strikes, we would be ready to meet our Saviour.
I had the unfortunate ‘privilege’ to actually watch a man die. He tossed and turned in his bed and fell off the bed and when we lifted him back, he fell off again, with all the rolling and writhing and eventually went motionless and one of the sisters present whispered: ‘He is gone!’
I don’t know how I am going to go out and I don’t know when that will be but until then I want to continue to do good unto all mankind and live to please God in every way possible.
Until then, I still have some things I am working on, in trying to make it right with our supreme God.
I would like to admonish you dear reader, to kindly do the same.
Let us not allow ourselves to become stubble for that heated fire which was really prepared for Satan and his imps.
That’s the way I see it. How do you see it?
