(CHARLESTOWN NEVIS)- All roads led to the Charlestown Waterfront on the afternoon of Thursday, July 23, 2015 for the official launch of Culturama 2015 under the theme ‘Culture Fete and Fun, Culturama 41’.
The event was held under the patronage of Mr. Arthur Evelyn and Mrs. Violet Nicholls who were members of the now defunct, Board of Trustees branching from the original NEDACS. This group was represented by former board member, Mr. Arthur Evelyn.
The venue was packed with sponsors, government officials and supporters of the festival. The afternoon proceedings got on the way with the National Anthem.
The event was chaired by Mrs. Veta Morton. She told those in attendance that she was pleased to be a part of such a significant occasion. She also noted that we as a people should always remember the persons who had the foresight to bring about the event in 1974 as we celebrate this year’s festival.
Mrs. Deborah Tyrell, Chairperson of Nevis Cultural Development Foundation gave some brief remarks. She stated that Culturama has grown drastically over the years since its inception. Mrs. Tyrell pointed out that the art form of calypso has also evolved from ‘nearga business’ to ‘social commentary’ over the years. She told those who attended the ceremony that they are aspiring to make the festival a memorable one. She continued, “we are trying our utmost best to make Culturama 41 an unforgettable one’. In conclusion she wished all the participants every success.
Hon. Mark Brantley, Minister responsible for Culture also gave some remarks. He said that he was proud to be associated with Culture as the minister a portfolio he has held for the past two years. Hon. Brantley also applauded the efforts made thus far by Mr. Antonio ‘Abonaty’ Liburd to make the event a success noting that he has been at the helm for seventeen (17) years. In closing, Brantley said that he is trying to keep fit as he has plans to take part in the ‘long jam’ from Gingerland to Charlestown.
Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Vance Amory also gave some remarks. He noted that this time of the year is when everybody comes together to have fun and merriment. The leader said he is hoping for a Culturama that will be characterized by peace. He hoped that the best participants would be victorious on the night of the shows. He concluded by declaring the festival open.
A plaque was given to the Mr. Evelyn representing the patron of the festival, by Miss Erma Johnson.
