(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- The April Criminal Assizes at the High Court, Charlestown, came to an end on Wednesday, May 6, 2015.

Nine cases were scheduled to be heard before the honorable court. Four of those matters were traversed cases from the November 2014 Assizes, and there were five new matters.

However, at the end of the Assizes, only four matters were heard, and only three were completed. That means that six criminal cases that were not tried during the April Criminal Assizes are expected to be heard in the next sitting of the Charlestown High Court in November 2015.

The matter involving Taj Taylor which was on the roster, had to be adjourned when he became a victim of a shooting incident on Saturday, May 2, 2015 in the West Bury area.

The Meads Pasture resident sustained injuries to both of his legs, which caused him to be hospitalized. As a result of this, Her Ladyship Justice Lorraine Williams discharged the jurors and ordered a new trial which will commence against the accused in the November 2015 Assizes.

Veon Sutton

The closing of this assizes also saw the sentencing of Veon Sutton, who pleaded guilty to wounding his mother Doreen Sutton-Moses. The incident took place at Low Street on September 27, 2013.

Even with her hands not functioning properly, Mrs. Sutton- Moses asked the court for leniency on her son. She asked the court not to impose a custodial sentence.

Her wish was granted by the judge and Sutton was charged a hefty fine of $10, 000.00. Sutton is to compensate his mother $6000.00 in 15 months or in default he would serve 15 months imprisonment. He was also fined $4000.00 to be paid in 15 months or in default he would serve 15 months imprisonment. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The judge also ordered that Sutton undergo a period of counseling. Sutton who is currently serving a prison sentence at Her Majesty’s Prison is to meet the order of the Court when he is released in June.
