Basseterre, St.Kitts )(TUCOM):-Leader of the Powerful Team UNITY Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris has pledged his Team’s full support for the security forces in their fight against crime. Dr. Harris made the commitment in an address to the nation in wake of the recent upsurge in violent crime including robberies and murders, in the federation.
Dr. Harris stated “Team Unity pledges to work closely with the security forces, in particular our Police, Coast Guard, Customs, Army and Fire Services and to provide them with the necessary equipment and forensic tools that they require to realistically confront this cancer of crime. It is unacceptable in modern St. Kitts and Nevis that our Police still do not have adequate transportation or adequate equipment and appliances to do their work. Cargo scanners must be provided at all ports of entry into the Federation in St. Kitts and Nevis so as to interrupt the flow of guns and ammunition into our shores. Our Coast Guard must be beefed up along with Customs patrols to ensure that our coastlines are free from smuggling. “
The dynamic Leader also gave his Team UNITY’s commitment to partner with the authorities on neighbouring islands to curtail the transport and illegal importation of contraband to St.Kitts-Nevis. He also indicated that his Team UNITY government will pursue the hiring of additional prosecutors and the creation of special courts to address the problem of judicial backlog .
“We have heard of local boats going to neighbouring islands to collect and transport contraband back to St. Kitts and Nevis under the cover of darkness. That must stopped. Team Unity proposes to partner with our neighbouring islands to ensure that it stops. We must hire additional prosecutors and create special criminal courts as needed to clear backlog and ensure swifter justice,” the popular Leader stated.
The problem of Crime has been a longstanding problem in the federation for the last 10 years. In 2011 St.Kitts-Nevis was ranked as the 2nd Most Murderous Country in the world and Basseterre was listed as the most murderous city. There has been 36 murders over the last 22 months at a rate of close to 2 murders per month. St.Kitts-Nevis tops the OECS in murder rate per capita and is the 2nd highest in the Caribbean region.
