Sylvester Merchant sentencing hearing adjourned Monday, December 16, 2013

(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- The sentencing of Sylvester Merchant that was scheduled to take place on Thursday, December 12, 2013 was adjourned until Monday, December 16, 2013. His case was the first matter to be heard in this criminal assizes.

On Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the Charlestown High Court a 12 member jury panel found the Gingerland resident guilty of unlawful carnal knowledge he but was found not guilty on the rape and buggery charges.

It is said that on February 19, 2013 at Pond Hill in the parish of St. George, Merchant did comment these sexual offenses to a female under the age of 16 to wit 15 years of age. He was represented by Dr. Henry Brown, QC and Attorney John Cato.

Meanwhile, the case against Kimron Lawrence and Orlando Hylton continues at the High Court. Both men stand trial accused of rape and robbery. They were both granted bail. However, because of Hylton’s Jamaican nationality, he could not guarantee surety and as a result he remains in police custody.

Due to the sensitive nature of these matters the media is not allowed to report on the proceedings.

Three other matters are listed on the docket. These include Geoffery Romany, Alistair Isaac and Ozandy Collins.
