The now annual Christena Disaster Memorial swim camp commenced on Tuesday 22nd August at the Yachtsman’s beach.
The camp, as per usual, is being coordinated by SWIM to WIN and sponsored by the Nevis Island Administration, specifically through the Department of Sports.
According to Terri Andrews, the main coordinator of the program, there are 45 children registered this year, catering for ages 5 to 13.
The usual trained volunteers are on hand to lead out with the teaching of necessary skills, but this year they have the welcomed assistance of the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard.
The children are being taught firstly to overcome the fear of the ocean and then taught through games and other fun ways, to enjoy the beach and the water.
They are then gradually taught such basic skills as paddling, floating and ultimately swimming.
The program is scheduled to climax this coming Friday -25th August with a presentation of certificates.
