Student-Athletes Receive Guidance Towards Achieving Scholarships

Despite heavy rains and inclement weather, student-athletes from Charlestown Secondary School and Gingerland Secondary School gathered at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park (MGRP) on Tuesday, November 19th.

A special seminar, coordinated by the Nevis Public Library, provided them with important information about obtaining athletic scholarships.

The main facilitators were Ms. Tamara Shaya Hoffmann, a Public Diplomacy Officer with the U.S. Embassy to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, and Ms. Andrea Walker, Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Senior Woman Administrator at the University of Indianapolis.

Ms. Walker discussed the requirements for acquiring athletic scholarships, emphasizing that academic performance is a crucial factor in the selection process. She also highlighted the importance of maintaining excellent grades and performing well in athletics throughout the duration of the scholarship, indicating that failing to excel could lead to the termination of the scholarship. Additionally, she provided guidance on the types of scholarships available and suggested various institutions for higher learning, particularly emphasizing the University of Indianapolis.

Ms. Hoffmann shared information regarding the process of obtaining student visas.

Also addressing the gathering was Hon. Troy Liburd, the Minister of Education, who encouraged the students to take advantage of such opportunities and to make them count toward a better future for themselves and their families.
