Mr. Speaker, Honourable members of this esteemed National Assembly, Citizen feedback is always important to understand how the people are feeling about their government.
The Team Unity Government which I am honoured to lead, was elected to handle the people’s business. We were elected to implement the prosperity agenda and to ensure that all receive their fair share.
We want to make sure that no one is left behind. This government is a UNITY government, a paradigm shift from what was— to what could be—- and now to what is.
This government began working for the people of St Kitts and Nevis since its formal presentation to the people and country on Sunday, February 22, 2015. The people believe that this government is for the people and by the people. This is a people centered government.
This government will not be defined by party affiliation. This government will only be defined by whether or not we implemented the people’s agenda.
This government will not be defined by party loyalty rather by how loyal we were to the people.
Do we keep our promises? Do we keep our word?
The principles of honesty, integrity, sacrifice, and social justice have inspired us. These are the God given guiding principles that we lived by.
Team UNITY also understands that a promise made must be a promise kept.
We are committed to keep our promises to the people.
The Anderson Poll
Don Anderson is one of the leading pollsters in the Caribbean who is called on by many governments to give statistical analysis and market research. He conducted a poll that shows the people of St. Kitts and Nevis overwhelmingly approve of the job which Team Unity is doing.
From the Removal of VAT, the establishment of the Sugar Worker Restoration Fund, to the appointment of the Governor General as well as the building of a new high school, the Team UNITY Government has overwhelming support from the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The poll Mr. Speaker showed that the support is above 80 percent for some initiatives. The people understand this government is an extension of them. When Cabinet makes a decision we always ask the question, how will this decision impact the people of St. Kitts and Nevis?
This poll shows that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis are experiencing the benefits of a Team Unity Government.
We know the election losers want our federation to believe otherwise. They continue to operate politricks and not focus on the people’s business.
We will allow them to focus on negative issues while we continue to work positively for you. We will continue to work for the people Mr. Speaker.
This government will continue to put the people first. We will continue paving the way for the people’s prosperity. We will continue to live up to the dreams of our forefathers and mothers.
This is our chance. This is our moment. Together we PLP, PAM, CCM and all and sundry will dwell together in UNITY.
A Vindication
The poll is a vindication of our approach to government and governance. It is a vindication of the politics of explanation. This poll tells us that when a government has a clear vision, mission, goals and measurable objectives the people will respond positively. We submit ourselves to the will of the people. We are not arrogant as to believe that the government is ours. It is the government of the people.
The people gave us 5 years in the first instance to do their work. They expect us not to go by anyone’s directive, time or speed. They expect us to be responsible, thoughtful, deliberate, purposeful, and focused on the big picture – the prosperity agenda.We have been doing just that.That is why our appointments and our policy initiatives have pleased so many. Over two thirds of the populace have confirmed their support and satisfaction.
Well known pollster Peter Wickham from Barbados and long associated with the St.Kitts and Nevis Labour party, commented positively on the recent poll. For him, the poll indicates that our team unity government is not flying blind.
As Leader of Team Unity I feel like exclaiming, To God be the glory such great things he has allowed Team Unity to do. I trust the people will continue to hold faith with us as we continue working for you.
