St. Kitts and Nevis Leading the Region in People-Centric Development—PM Drew

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts —(PMO) Prime Minister Hon. Dr Terrance Drew has underscored St. Kitts and Nevis’ status as a regional leader in human development and people-focused policies during an in-depth discussion on WINN FM’s ‘Inside the News’ program on November 16, 2024.

The Prime Minister highlighted the Federation’s significant achievements, which have positioned it as the #1 country in CARICOM on the Human Development Index (HDI), surpassing traditional leaders such as Barbados and The Bahamas.

“Our policies are unmatched in the region. No other country has delivered dividends directly to its people while ensuring the highest minimum wage, increased salaries for civil servants, and direct debt relief for families.”

He continued, “We are the only country in the Western Hemisphere to have delivered dividends to our people, not once but twice. This is a testament to our commitment to inclusive growth and ensuring that every citizen feels the direct benefits of our economic progress.”

Notably, the Drew-led government introduced an unprecedented increase in the minimum wage, making St. Kitts and Nevis a regional leader in wage standards. Civil servants also benefited from an 8% salary increase in 2023, which equates to a double salary distributed throughout the year. This policy, combined with ongoing efforts to reduce cost-of-living pressures, demonstrates the administration’s focus on improving the quality of life for workers and their families.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the People’s Assistance Program (PAP) reset package, which has alleviated debt burdens for thousands of families. By restructuring obligations with the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC), the Water Services Department, and the National Housing Corporation (NHC), the initiative has provided tangible financial relief to citizens.

Despite these significant accomplishments, PM Drew acknowledged that challenges remain. “We accept there are challenges, but the facts speak for themselves—St. Kitts and Nevis is the most progressive and people-focused country in the region,” he affirmed.

He continued to emphasise the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, which has been central to his administration’s success. He also highlighted plans for further growth, including investments in renewable energy, agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure, which will create jobs and diversify the economy.

“These achievements are not accidental but the result of strategic planning and bold decision-making. We have recalibrated our priorities to align with the immediate and long-term needs of our people. St. Kitts and Nevis is setting a new standard in the region, proving that with sound policies and a people-first approach, significant progress is possible.”
